The KBS Step-pattern

Down at the PGA Merchandise Show, we recognized several PGA Professionals were interested in what the core design feature of the KBS shaft was. More specifically, many were curious what determined the shaft’s playability and performance for the common golfer.

In talking with Kim Braly, designer of the KBS series, he focuses on the KBS step-pattern as being the principle design for the KBS Tour’s playability and performance. As shown on www.KBSshafts.com/technology.php; the step pattern follows a proportionate mass and radius reduction during the step progression. This means, the shaft follows an equal reduction in stiffness, moving butt to tip, where each step is proportionate to the former. This is accomplished by increasing the wall-thickness as the outside diameter of the shaft decreases and coinciding this with the step lengths.

So what does it all mean? It translates to better energy transfer. The KBS Tour shaft design encourages the flow of energy from swing to clubhead “like a whip”.
